And now, to Speyside!
Independent bottler, Watt Whisky is the husband and wife team of Mark and Kate Watt. Together they source and bottle casks of quality spirits, predominantly Scotch whiskies and rum. Over the last few days, I’ve been reviewing a selection of drams from the Watt’s latest release. Thus far, I’ve sampled a peated malt from Arran and an old grain from Invergordon but this time, my attention turns to Speyside and the Elgin-based, La Martiniquaise-owned, Glen Moray Distillery.
Watt Whisky Glen Moray Review

This single cask, single malt Scotch whisky was distilled at Glen Moray and matured for a total of 11 years, including 14 months finishing in an oloroso sherry hogshead. It’s bottled at 54.6% abv.
Tasting notes: On the nose: nutty and rich with raisins and walnuts. Toffee and dark chocolate. Digestive biscuits and a wee bit of coffee. Malty and fruity under the sherry. I’m even picking up some tropical fruits. On the palate: A dried fruits arrival leads to a mix of caramels and toffees before developing some dry, oaky spice towards the back. Red fruits. Nutmeg. The sherry returns in a wee burst of oloroso just as the experience moves towards the finish.
Thoughts: A well-matured whisky this one. The balance between spirit and oak is excellent with the sherry dominant but never overpowering. Throughout the experience, there are flashes of a lighter, crisper, Speyside spirit character but it’s fleeting and each time it comes close to being tangible, the sherry oak returns. It’s like teasing glimpses of hidden layers and it seems to encourage further exploration. A dram that could greatly reward repeat visits.
Price: £93.90. A dram I really enjoyed but the price is a bit less appealing.
