Watt Whisky Week!
Over the next few reviews on A Scot on Scotch, I’ll be directing my attention towards Campbeltown and the husband and wife pairing of Mark and Kate Watt, otherwise known as independent bottlers, Watt Whisky.
There are a few samples to get through, so I’ll be keeping the background information short and sweet but there will be plenty more Watt Whisky drams in the days ahead so remember to check back or alternatively, you can subscribe to the blog for free, using the form at the bottom of the page. Watt Whisky Arran 7-year-old
This single malt Scotch whisky was distilled at Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran. It’s relatively young at just 7 years old but that can often work in the favour of a peated malt – which this is. The whisky was aged in a refill bourbon barrel and bottled at 59.1% abv
Tasting notes: Soft campfire smoke, pine trees, varnished oak and honeyed biscuits. Baking spices. Salty arrival with black pepper, salted caramel and honey. Dry, ashy smoke. A splash of water reveals lemon and lime and gristy malt. The peat smoke is gentle at first but increases in power, especially after water. We’re not quite in full-on Islay territory here though. A wee burnt toast note, right at the finish.
Thoughts: One of the most coastal Lochranza drams I’ve come across. The Arran distillery usually produces a spirit closer in style to the whiskies of Speyside but this feels every bit the island dram. It’s salty and smoky with fruity spirit and malty backbone coming together to make a highly enjoyable experience. A lovely, everyday, peated sipper.
Price: £77. Perhaps a bit beyond the everyday sipper category at this price but I think it shows the quality to justify it.
