Watt Whisky Invergordon Review

Watt Whisky Grain

I’m currently working through some samples from Campbeltown-based independent bottler, Watt Whisky. There are a few drams to discuss in the days ahead, so I’m keeping the background detail to a minimum for now and concentrating purely on the whisky.

In the previous post, I sampled a 7-year-old peated malt from Lochranza in Arran but this time, the whisky is a single grain from Invergordon.

Invergordon is the only full-time grain distillery that’s based in the highlands of Scotland. With a potential production capacity of 40 million litres of alcohol per year, it dwarfs even the largest of malt distilleries.

Watt Whisky has bottled a single cask, distilled all the way back in 1997 (I dread to think what 16-year-old me was up to at the time). The spirit was aged for 26 years in a hogshead before being bottled at 52.3%.

Tasting notes: I found aromas of creme brulee, muesli and honey with pineapple and lemon juice. I also picked up lots of oak but not old dunnage oak, more like fresh, recently worked oak. A bit like sticking your nose in a carpenter’s workshop. On the tip of the tongue, there was some vanilla with pineapple and lemon meringues. Some black pepper spice sprinkled over oak with savoury biscuits.

Thoughts: This is quite a characterful grain. For one thing, it seems to carry some weight on the palate and as a result, it can take a wee bit of water which helps to reduce some of the peppery heat and lets even more of the fruitiness come through. A highly enjoyable example of the single grain Scotch category.

Price: £95. I’m not sure I liked it enough to pay that kind of money but you have to bear the impressive age of the whisky in mind.
