A Scot on Scotch

A Scot on Scotch is a heartfelt celebration of Scotland’s national drink. It is the virtual home of writer, blogger, vlogger and whisky lover, Neill Murphy. This site was formerly known as the Whisky Reviews blog.

A Scot on Scotch is a platform for news, views and reviews on everything related to Scotch whisky. Formerly known as Whisky Reviews, the website has been rebranded to better reflect its unique identity in the online whisky world.

Whisky Reviews Blog

The Whisky Reviews blog began in 2015. Since then, more than 1000 drinks have been tasted, analysed and opined upon. Scotland’s distilleries are steeped in history and folklore with many a tale to tell. My reviews are a jumping-off point to explore some of those incredible stories. There is a priority focus on Scotch whisky but other whiskies, from all four corners of the globe have been reviewed. New whisky reviews are published twice a week. Sometimes more frequently. A full rundown of everything reviewed can be found by visiting the Whisky Reviews Hit List. See Menu.

A Scot on Scotch on YouTube

A Scot on Scotch launched on YouTube in early 2024. I had been making short videos on Instagram and TikTok and co-hosting live streams for the Islay Whisky Academy before deciding to take the plunge and create a channel of my own. Designed to work in harmony with the Whisky Reviews blog, the channel covers various aspects of the whisky world with dram recommendations and my opinions on all the latest news and developments.

About Neill Murphy

I’m Neill Murphy. I got into whisky by accident. I was attending a funeral in the highlands at the time. When I arrived at the wake, I was offered a dram of 12-year-old Highland Park. I didn’t want to appear rude so I took it and quickly made my way to a quiet corner where I could sip my drink and hope no one saw the grimace on my face. As it happened, that very sip changed my life.

Within a month I had gathered four or five bottles of malt and soon it had become a hobby. I scoured shelves for books and followed dozens of bloggers and vloggers who shouted passionately into the void about every conceivable facet of the whisky world. I attended as many whisky tastings as time, money and my liver would allow, soaking up as much information as people were willing to send my way. Then, in 2014 I took a course, led by renowned whisky writer John Lamond. Two years later I completed the ‘Whisky Ambassador‘ course. The hobby had become something of an obsession.

As well as writing about whisky, I enjoy photographing distilleries and will be uploading some of my favourite pictures to the website, going forward.
