Dràm Mòr

Dràm Mòr is an independent bottler of Scotch whisky and other spirits. I’ve been fortunate enough to try many of the whiskies released by this family business and can happily testify to the quality showcased in each batch.

Of late, I have been tasting my way through recent Dràm Mòr releases – I reviewed a single cask from Aberfeldy here. In this review, however, I’m sampling a single malt from Tomintoul.

*Full disclosure: the whisky featured in this review was sent to me free of charge. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents.

Tomintoul is a Speyside distillery owned by Angus Dundee Distillers. The distillery was established in the 1960s and produces a light, delicate Speyside malt in the traditional Glenlivet style.

The whisky is 13 years of age and was finished in a first-fill Pedro Ximenez sherry cask. It’s bottled at 56.1%.

Tasting notes: The PX finish leads the nose with raisins and sultanas, leather and tobacco. There’s treacle and light gingery spice. The palate is similarly sherried with the same dried fruit notes dominating the arrival. Some oaky spice develops in the mid-palate and the finish turns a wee bit woody. A splash of water brought out honeycomb, dark chocolate and some charcoal in the finish.

Thoughts: Time for an admission: I’m not Tomintoul’s biggest fan. Its light, delicate, Speyside style all too often fails to hit the spot for me. That said, I enjoyed aspects of this dram. The sherry finish brings a fair bit to the party but I was still left with the feeling that there wasn’t an awful lot going on underneath the PX.

Price: £82. Enjoyable if you like a sherry cask but wasn’t enough to tempt me personally.
